UNAWATUNA: THE BEST BEACH OF SRI LANKA

Still with the whales recorded in the retinas, we got on a busy new bus that leaves us in a couple of hours leaving us on the main street of Unawatuna. We like this site even before we know it… and it is that with such an exotic name it cannot disappoint us.

And it doesn't: Unawatuna was the beach place we liked the most in Sri Lanka, too bad we only had 2 days of time to enjoy it ... well, Jordi returns to Spain and we have to continue with our backpacking!

After having left our backpacks in the little hotel that was waiting for us, we put on our swimsuit and the beach to take a good dip!

With the bath we also have an abundant (too much) session, sun and we end up like 3 crabs. It was in the water where we met Evasio, an Italian super bureaucrat who traveled the world and has no intention of stopping. How big!

After getting out of the water we have a very clear objective that we have been pursuing for days without being able to reach it: a lady burger, and my mother ... let the wait be rewarded! We found a bbbg hamburger: good, pretty, cheap and giant.

With a full belly you don't have to be a genius to know what we would like to do: a mega nap. And, without a doubt, these days are a vacation within the trip. Now to finish off the good day, play fish dinner and beer in abundance! Yuppi

The next day he touches another beach session: thanks to an Italian hotel we discover the Vijaya beach with some pools of water that are formed at low tide and that leave rocks so green that they look like a meadow! Very pretty.

There we stayed for a few hours chatting, taking pictures or begging a local not to piss on us (ok, maybe he was not going to piss on us, but the first feeling he gave us is that he was going to take the pichurra to pee and the current was coming towards us ).

We were leaving when Lety had a stroke of luck. And no, he didn't win the lottery. A bird pooped on his head, they say it brings good things, doesn't it? Let's see if it's true!

We caught a tuktuk and went to the other Unawatuna Beach, there is everything much more touristy and tailored to the average guiri: souvenir shops, restaurants with western food, hippie clothes and everything a tourist can want.

In our case, desire has a name: hamburger. It is that after yesterday we can not repeat! And on the beachfront we could enjoy a hamburger with potatoes and cocacola for about € 2.

We bought one friendship bracelets (total guiri day!) And in the distance I see a man who a few hours before I saw in one of the photos of the Italian hotel: it is PiPi. They call him that because he travels all day at the beach selling PiPi (postcards & peanuts) hehe when he gets close I can not help telling him the story of the photo, get a smile ... and buy him a postcard: yes mom I'm going to send it to you!

Unawatuna was the last stop of Jordi's trip: it has been a great 3 weeks that we will never forget, and we are sure that neither will you!

USEFUL INFO

How to get?

We arrived by bus from Unawatuna. The trip took 1 hour and little, it cost us 45 rupees per person. The journey is beautiful as it passes along the coast and with some luck you can see the famous fishermen of Sri Lanka!

Where to sleep?

We stayed at the Nor Lanka Hotel

Where to eat?

There is a lot of offer both in Unawatuna beach as well as in the area where we were staying: the golden beach sunset colonial restaurant is fine, with a giant hamburger!

Beaches

The beaches of the town of Unawatuna are separated by a couple of rocky areas. The part closest to the temple has wider beaches and more bars and restaurants, although the other area has the coolest waters. However, the one we liked the most was Vijaya, a couple of km. To get there, just take a tuctuc and tell him that you are going there, he will leave you at a hotel with that name, which you will have to go through to face the beach. Very cool! In this restaurant they also have wood-fired pizzas (nothing cheap by the way).
