Split was the second stop of the cruise, although we already knew it from our trip through the Balkans that we started in Croatia, so we just let ourselves be carried away by the narrow streets of Diocletian's Palace.

If you are cruising in Split and have a few hours to visit this curious city, we propose a route so you do not miss anything Everything to see and do in Split in a few hours visit. And you know, at the end of the article you have all the useful information to prepare the visit.

Tip: if you have more time and want to know all the best 20 things to see and do in Split, check out this post.

But first, check out our Guide for first-time cruise passengers

After disembarking, take the street full of coffee shops and businesses to the left. Here you can exchange some euros for kunas (the Croatian currency) if you are thinking of taking something on your visit. By the way, next to a bar with the red awning there is an open WiFi network that works!

Walking approximately 15 minutes you reach the southeast end of the Palace, where every morning you ride thePazarun local marketWe love these places! So enjoy it! Also, if you have not had time to have breakfast here you can do it very very cheap, we recommend the feta cheese burek.

If you continue along the southern part of the palace, following the entire marina along the promenade called Riva, you will find one of the four entrances to the palace: the Brass Gate, which will give you access to the Palace. The other three entrances are at the remaining ends of the wall: to the north the Puerta Aurea, to the east the Puerta Platea and to the west the Puerta Ferrea.

The Diocletian's Palace It was built in the III and IV centuries by this emperor, do not fall into the error of believing that you enter a closed place, a castle with its rooms, courtyards, etc ... The Diocletian's Palace is a network of narrow alleys within a square closed by walls, an authentic historical center.

You will see that after the main entrance of the south, on both sides some vaults open: they are the basements of the palace, in magnificent condition (you can visit them with payment of 40 kunas). If you prefer to save the entrance you can go straight ahead and go up the stairs that go to the heart of the Palace: the peristyle. It is the meeting place of the citadel, the most important place historically and where tourists meet today on the steps of the square.

Here you will find theSt. Domnius Cathedral, with its imposing bell tower that you can access. It is said that if you are able to climb to the top, you still cannot be considered old.

If you take an alley to the left you will reach the Jupiter Temple, and you can go through the narrowest street in Split, on your left side, the “Pusti proc"Literally:" let me through. "

Split's historic center is small, so you can continue walking towards its other main entrance, the Golden Gate, on the opposite side where we enter. You will probably be surprised by the huge statue of Gregory of Nin (Although now that you know it, you will be less surprised ... stop reading travel blogs!), touch the pinrel to bring you luck.

Another place you can not miss is the square with its clock tower or theMilesi Palace. And finally, leaving the palace on its west side, visit the elongated Prokurative square, with its arcaded sides, which will remind you a little of San Marco Square.

Although undoubtedly the best thing is to get lost in its streets (how many times we will have used this expression in the blog) and discover corners of a postcard. Split was the city that surprised us most in Croatia, you will enjoy it, trust us!

These are the best things to see and do in Split in a few hours, on a visit from a cruise. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

If you have more time available you can make several visits around Split, such as the town of Trogir, or the ruins of the Roman settlement of Salona.
